Why Saving for College Matters: A Legacy of Care and Opportunity
We are honored to share this guest blog post written by the office of California State Treasurer Fiona Ma.
Saving for higher education can feel daunting, especially when daily expenses already stretch a family’s budget. But even small, consistent contributions can make a meaningful difference over time. For many, the act of saving is also an expression of heritage, resilience, and the belief that education opens doors, not just for individuals, but for entire communities.
For many families, the idea of saving for college is about more than just dollars and cents—it’s a promise. A promise to provide opportunity, to create options, and to invest in the dreams and values we pass from one generation to the next. That’s what National College Savings Day—held every year on May 29 in recognition of the 529 tax code that created college savings plans—is all about.
In California, that promise comes to life through ScholarShare 529, our state’s official college savings plan. For more than 25 years, ScholarShare 529 has helped families take that first step toward a brighter future by making college and career training more financially accessible.
To honor 529 Day this year, ScholarShare 529 is offering a special $50 bonus to help families get started. Open a new account between May 20 and May 31, 2025, with at least $50, and use the code 529Day25. Then, commit to monthly contributions of $50 or more for six consecutive months to qualify. It’s a simple way to build momentum and a meaningful way to say, “We’re planning for you.”
With low-cost investment options, tax advantages, and the flexibility to use funds for tuition, books, computer equipment, and certain room and board costs, ScholarShare 529 makes saving more accessible for families from all backgrounds. Funds can also be used for apprenticeships and career training, helping students pursue paths that align with their goals and talents. To date, families have used more than $7 billion from ScholarShare 529 accounts to pay for education expenses.
Saving is a quiet act of hope. It’s a way to honor where we come from and to shape where we’re going.
